Jane Blundell Welcome to my website. I am a member of the Australian Watercolour Institute, Australia's oldest watercolour society, and an exhibiting member of the Royal Art Society of New South Wales. I am passionate about watercolour, colour, drawing and sketching. My art inspiration and ideas come largely from the natural world – flowers, trees, rocks, people and landscapes - and I love. The Royal Watercolour Society exists to exhibit, encourage and promote the craft of watercolour in its many different guises. Whilst painting in watercolour has been described as a “truly English Art” There is a fine tradition of painting in this medium in Wales going back to the late 18th Century.

The library and archives of the Royal Society, the UK’s national academy of science, contain rich collections of printed books, manuscripts and paintings which have been developed since the Society’s founding in Images from these sources have been hand-selected for . G John Blockley was a visionary painter known for his books and ground- breaking approach to watercolour. He challenged the watercolour ‘rules’ at a time when traditional methods were the standard practice and, with no formal art training, devoted his prodigious energy to a personal, progressive way of painting and an obsessive search for the essence of his subjects.

The Royal Watercolour Society was founded in and has received a painting from virtually every major figure since its inauguration. This is a selection of those paintings. The Society of Artists opened in and the Royal Academy held its first exhibition in Watercolours at these early exhibitions were exhibited as 'drawings' which had been 'stained' or 'tinted'. But exhibiting in close proximity to oil paintings spurred watercolour artists to experiment with both the medium and their subject matter.
